Obama dropped a major bomb. He acknowledges that the #1 cause of global warming is animal agriculture. In an interview with Time Magazine’s contributer Joe Klein, Obama says:

I was just reading an article in the New York Times by Michael Pollen about food and the fact that our entire agricultural system is built on cheap oil. As a consequence, our agriculture sector actually is contributing more greenhouse gases than our transportation sector. And in the mean time, it’s creating monocultures that are vulnerable to national security threats, are now vulnerable to sky-high food prices or crashes in food prices, huge swings in commodity prices, and are partly responsible for the explosion in our healthcare costs because they’re contributing to type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease, obesity, all the things that are driving our huge explosion in healthcare costs. That’s just one sector of the economy.

Add that to the fact that he’s rescuing a shelter dog, and I’d be willing to bet Obama will be the most eco and animal-friendly president yet. Maybe he’ll pardon all turkeys this Thanksgiving?

I bet Dennis Kucinich is feeling okay about losing now. It appears as though Obama is going to be just as agriculturally revolutionary as he would be (I hope). caveat–I don’t know what Mr. Kucinich’s exact policies would have been (does anyone), but as a fellow vegan I am proud of how Obama’s are shaping up.

Now if we can only get him to say he supports gay marriage. Come on Barack!

  3. John says:

Um, not to be the voice of reason or anything, but in the above quote, Obama does not criticize *animal* agriculture, only agriculture. And he hasn’t adopted a shelter dog *yet*. Let’s remember that he’s not only merely human, he’s also a politician. His actions, not his words, are what will matter.

  4. John, you think he’s talking about a carrot farm when he refers to “the explosion in our healthcare costs because they’re contributing to type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease, obesity”?

  5. also, what do you think the cattle are eating? Air?

  6. John says:

Probably not a carrot farm, no, Joshua. But overeating chips, Cheez Whiz, and other plant-based processed foods can lead to obesity, which can lead to heart disease and diabetes. Pollan isn’t an animal rights activist so it’s unlikely Obama got an AR message from Pollan’s book. Maybe Obama will try to make animal farms more environmentally sustainable, which would be great. I support Obama; I just understand he’s not going not be King, just President.

  7. Find me a plant-based cheez-whiz and I’d be a happy man! 🙂
Hey, I know where Pollan stands on animals, and I know Obama is not king, but just the fact that he connected some dots – publicly – is such a shocking change of pace that it’s exciting. You gotta admit that, at least! And when we talk about agriculture, a huge portion of it is either animal agriculture, or agriculture used to feed the animals. I’m just sayin’…

Well. I, uh, obviously meant a href=”http://unabashed.wordpress.com/2007/01/26/raw-vegan-recipe-whiz-cheez/”>Whiz Cheez or perhaps Nacheezmo, happy man. 🙂 You get my point about it not being just animal products that can cause disease. Yes, it’s exciting that Obama seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I guess with all the hype and “great expectations” placed on him, I’m bracing myself for what is sure to be at least some disappointment. I hope to be wrong this one time.
